Ducks Rising: The Inside Look
The Week That Was
1. Offense at a Glance: The offense was a tale of two halves when it comes to efficiency and how dialed in the operation felt. After an almost perfect performance against OSU, I thought Dillon Gabriel was just solid Saturday, with some misses through the air that he usually completes with ease. Furthermore, there were multiple shots down the field, specifically Traeshon Holden on the play Ferguson got hurt, where Gabriel missed an open touchdown. I saw two instances of Stewart running free as well. Similar to last year, I've noticed Gabriel locking in at times on Tez, where other receivers have a better look or have straight beaten their man. Tez is an awesome receiver no doubt, but as teams begin to lock on to him more and more, Stewart and Holden are winning a lot and can help create more pop through the air.
After the rewatch, I also noticed a lot of screens that we continued to run with limited efficiency. Our TE and WR blocking continues to be inconsistent, but I also think there was a lack of advantage numbers-wise on some of these calls. Not sure if they were RPO or called pass, but there seemed to be some intentionality behind it. Between that, some trick balls, and new looks formationally, I found myself wondering how much some of the play-calling Saturday was to put some different things on film moving forward.
That said, Gabriel was efficient again, and it was awesome to see him get in Bryan Addison’s face after that dirty hit on Ferguson. Love to see that from your starting QB. For those expressing concerns about the offense through 4 games, it remains to be seen how much of our best stuff we are really running with Ohio State just a week away. Thankfully, that answer will come soon enough.
